Student Activities

The College of Nursing provides educational, cultural, spiritual, and social activities throughout the year. Student council meetings are held monthly and class meetings are held periodically. Special committees are formed for planning programs. Participation in these activities give the student opportunities for growth in individual and group settings, to volunteer in the community, and a chance to practice leadership, decision-making, and other related skills.

The activities calendar begins in August, with freshmen orientation. The week begins with a review of the program of study, available student services, and instructional orientation. Special social events are planned throughout the week.

Freshman Pinning is held each year in January. This event brings the freshman class one step closer to reaching their goal. Families have an opportunity to meet the faculty and tour the educational building.

"Moving-Up Day" ceremony is held annually in August. This signifies the freshman class promotion to senior students.

The greatest event for seniors is Graduation which usually takes place at the Church of Our Lady of Lourdes in May. A liturgy is celebrated on the morning of graduation and is followed by a breakfast held at an outside restaurant for the graduates and their families. Commencement exercises in the afternoon complete the day.

Central New York, including Utica, has a great deal to offer students. The area offers a variety of social, cultural, historical, natural, and recreational attractions.

The Munson-Williams-Proctor Institute offers one of the finest art collections in the Northeast. The Stanley Performing Arts Center sponsors many Broadway plays, Great Artist Series, and is home to the Utica Symphony Orchestra. The College is a member of the Great Artists Series and the Broadway Theatre League.

Other Colleges located a short distance from the College of Nursing are Mohawk Valley Community College, Utica College, SUNY Institute of Technology and Herkimer County Community College. Students may attend their social and cultural programs. Each college has up-to-date libraries and bookstores. The Utica Public Library on Genesee Street has complete facilities for recreational and research work.

Career and Placement Services

Career and placement services are offered to students who seek employment opportunities while attending school by contacting the recruitment office.

Senior nursing students seeking entry level positions as a graduate/registered nurse are made aware of available jobs during a recruitment luncheon held annually in January of each year.

Area employers are encouraged to send notices of job fairs and job openings to be posted on the "Career Opportunities" bulletin board in the student lounge.

Disability Student Services

Students with disabilities may contact the Disabilities Services Coordinator at (315) 798-8253 to discuss potential accommodations. Typical accommodations include extended time for testing in a quiet location, textbooks in alternate format, as well as identified needs determined by the disability. Accommodations are implemented to ensure compliance with the American Disabilities Act and Section 504 of the Rehabilitation Act.

The College of Nursing building is handicap accessible.
